On Friday, May 2nd, I participated in a benefit concert to help save the music programs for the elementary level students in the Alameda School District. The concert was produced by the Alameda PTA Council<\/a> and Entire Productions<\/a>. The star-studded affair featured a who’s-who of Alameda musician’s, artists, parents, and students all donating their time and talents and coming together to help the grade school music teachers and students. All proceeds went to the AUSD Elementary Music Programs. <\/p>\n

The concert was held at Alameda’s historic Kofman Auditorium in downtown and was MC’d by KCBS-740AM’s own Stan Bunger. The concert featured performances by the Eye Witness News Blues Band (featuring Stan Bunger and Mike Sugarman of KCBS and Steve Rubenstein of the SF Chronicle), Al Hart, Natasha Miller<\/a>, Dann Zinn<\/a>, Chris Planas, the Alameda students, and myself. While I don’t have kids in the Alameda schools, I was happy to be a part of such a grass-roots, historic event. I was fortunate enough to go to school in a time and in an area where we had music in the schools at no cost to kids. My exposure to music at a young age not only led me to a career in music, but helped me travel and meet people and see places I otherwise wouldn’t have. Music also introduced me to people who are life long friends and gave me mentors in my teachers who are like a second family to me. <\/p>\n

You can troll out all the facts you want about how music makes kids smarter, more social, etc, etc. The fact I know to be true is, for me and all my friends who participated, music provided some of the most inspirational, rewarding, and life changing experiences we will have ever known.<\/p>\n
